| DWI, OWI, DUI, These are all terms used by the law for
people driving a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol or
drugs. It is against the law to drive or operate any motor
vehicle if under the influence of alcohol as the senses may be
impaired. DWI- Driving while intoxicated. OWI- Operating
a motor vehicle while intoxicated, DUI- Driving under the influence of
alcohol and/or other drugs.
Drunk driving is responsible for a large number of deaths,
injuries, damages and accidents every year and Anti-drunk driving
advertising campaigns have aimed to raise peoples awareness of the
legal situation and the dangers of driving while intoxicated.
I wonder how many people take notice of the drunk driving campaigns
or even take notice of the laws!
I live almost opposite a public house and if your car is not parked
outside of your house by early evening, it is almost impossible to
find a parking space in the vicinity. With the small amount of alcohol
allowed by the law it is needless to say that the majority of those
people driving are well over the limit when they leave the public
house.
The law has so many loopholes that the main thing that drunk
drivers fear is the loss of their driving licence and not the fact
that someone could be injured or even killed.
Many people do try to act responsible and their car is left at home
when they go out for a drink, but what many people do not realise is
that quite often after a heavy night of drinking the alcohol is still
in their system the following morning. They jump into their car to go
to work and straight away they are driving under the influence of
alcohol even if they don't realise it.
If an accident happens that morning they could be breathalysed and
straight away booked for driving under the influence of alcohol.
