The payment of £250 to be an egg donor was no incentive to go to the trouble of donating eggs for childless couples, but that maximum payment is soon to be axed and the it could rise to £800 or more.
A woman can donate her eggs every cycle which means that during the year she could earn thousands of pounds.
This rise has been brought about by the number of childless couples who are now going abroad for treatment rather than wait up to two years due to the shortage of egg donors in this country.
Now if you live in the US payments for donors runs into thousands of dollars, and believe it or not they pay a premium for those who are good looking.
It is expected that the egg donor payment should rise some time next year when the liberalisation of fertility policy is set to be investigated by the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority in a public consultation.
There are bound to those people against such a rise judging whether it is morally right to pay for human life, but for childless couples it is a ray of hope that could bring their hopes and dreams to fruition.
At present there are only about 1.200 women donating egs yearly, but if the changes to payments came about this could rise drastically, meaning waiting time for couples would be cut to months rather than years for their chance to become parents.
