Depression
During a lifetime it is probable that everyone suffers from some form of depression. It could be triggered off by money worries, boyfriend or maritial troubles, and especially problems at work.
For many people these depressions lift after a couple of weeks or when a matter is resolved, but for others it can be a long and painful experience.
Depression is a form of mental illness and it can triggers all sorts of side effects. Sleeping is affected as usually the mind is alert, and worrying about the main cause of the problem keeps you awake. During the daytime you feel listless due to lack of sleep and your worries seem larger especially if it is a work problem.
As well as the lack of energy during the daytime your appetite is often affected so you eat less causing your energy to be at all time low, this can also show in weight loss as well. You often develop aches and pains and these cause you more worry as you imagine you have heart problems or even cancer.
Due to the lack of sleep at nights you could find yourself napping during the daytime, watching a television program through to the end is a thing of the past as you fall asleep part way through. It can also affect your memory and phone or card numbers you use often could suddenly disappear from your mind. It is all part of the depression.
Your GP will usually prescribe antidepressants, these are not addictive like they used to be in the old days, usually you will come out of your depression in about two weeks and get back to normal.
Your GP can also refer you for counselling which may be needed, this can be a help along side the medication.
